We Are in Unprecedented Times – Many of us are working from home

Thanks to Covid-19, our world as we know it has stopped.  We no longer get up, get ready, and head into the office…unless we have been deemed essential.  Even then, we may not be heading into the office at all.  We may find ourselves like this poor person in the picture – stressed out, kids running and jumping all over, and still being expected to meet our deadlines and get **** done.  It’s overwhelming!

There are, however, some things that we can do to make life easier on ourselves.  Here are some tips for working from home during Covid-19.

Tip #1 Set A Schedule

Keep a schedule just like you did when you were going in to the office.  Get up, get ready, and sit down at your workspace at the same time you normally would.  This goes for kids too!  Work when they work.  Have lunch with them at the same time.  Schedule your kids reading or screen time for when you have that conference call or zoom meeting.  Will it be a challenge?  Absolutely!  Will it be worth it?  Yes!

Tip #2 Have a Dedicated Workspace

If you have an office in your home, then that’s great!  If you don’t, create one!  Clear off the dining room table and set yourself and the kids up there.  Make it a game.  Pretend that you’re playing office with the kids.  Everyone gets a task.  You have your work, they have their school work or a page to colour (depending on the kids age).

Tip #3 Take Breaks

When the kids were in school they had their recess or lunch breaks.  At the office, you would get up from your desk at certain points in the day for breaks too.  Do the same thing at home.  Don’t think that because you are at home that you have to somehow power through your day.  Your kids can’t do it and you shouldn’t either!

Give yourself credit for getting this far.  You’re doing great!  I hope that these tips for working from home will help you as you adjust to what is essentially a new normal for most of us.  It’s not an easy adjustment for anyone to make but if you can put these into practice, I believe you will find the day much easier and more satisfying.  Good luck!  We’re all figuring this thing out together
